THE SHARE OF THOSE OPERATORS IN THE LOCAL MARKETS OFTEN DEPENDS ON THE EXISTING PUBLIC REGULATIONS: LICENSED Operators are required to gain prior approval from local authorities before they can build, open or operate a new care home. E.g. Belgium, France & Italy. FREE MARKET Operators are allowed to develop care homes largely without interference from local and national governments. E.g. Germany, Spain or the UK. OUTSOURCED Local authorities outsource operational responsibility to private companies, which hold long term contracts. E.g. Finland, Norway and Sweden. In 2018, the 5 largest private European Operators (Korian, Orpea, DomusVi, HC-One, FSHC) are expected to manage a total number of private beds of almost 200 000, which has been increasing recently mainly through acquisitions of competitors. While FSHC and HC-One are focused on the English market, Korian, Orpea and DomusVi have developed their portfolio throughout Europe, growing thanks to various acquisitions.
