Healthcare Vital Signs
2018 RESEARCH & INSIGHTS We have found that occupancy levels are lower in elderly care than mental health and learning difficult care homes. Martin Robb, Head of Healthcare at Cushman & Wakefield, says ‘despite the commonly cited shortage of elderly care homes across the country, our insight is that supply and demand is subject to more complex relationships connected to utilisation than a pure occupancy statistic. We note, though, that there is even less capacity available in mental health and learning disability settings’. The data has been taken from over 600 valuations. It’s reassuring that the Cushman & Wakefield figure for older people’s care homes is in line with current national average of 89% (Laing Buisson). Having visited over 43,000 care home beds and valued £6bn worth of healthcare properties across the country in the last 18months, Cushman &Wakefield has been able to draw some insights from this valuation data.
